Why did you become a therapist?

På samma sätt som att ångest kan upplevas på många olika sätt, så kan anledningarna till varför man får ångest vara många. Vanligtvis brukar man dela upp bakomliggande orsaker till ångest i två kategorier: biologiska faktorer och omgivningsfaktorer.

Ångest kan upplevas på många olika sätt. Det kan vara en upplevelse av ängslan, en ältande oro, en intensiv rädsla eller regelrätt panik. Ett visst mått av ångest är en naturlig del av allt mänskligt liv.  Genom att vi känner ångest görs vi uppmärksamma på eventuella hot i vår omgivning, och våra kroppar förbereder sig för att kunna stå emot detta hot. Detta sker genom att det sympatiska nervsystemet ökar den aktivitet i kroppen som bidrar till en ökad förmåga att antingen fly eller fäkta, något som kallas kamp- eller flyktsystemet.

What does a typical therapy session with you look like?

“Some sessions are more structured and others are more free flowing, but I will usually start with a check-in, then provide a safe, non-judgmental space to collaboratively work through the presenting concern(s), and end with a summary of what was discussed to highlight takeaways of the session. Most sessions are 50 or 90 minutes and may include an individual, couple, family, or any combination thereof, depending on the client’s goals and theoretical approach used. An important part of my work is to empower my clients to make their own decisions, healthily express their emotions, and to gently and curiously challenge unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving. ”
